The Mountlake Terrace Transit Center project is nearly complete and proceeding on schedule and under budget. Community Transit is planning a February 2009 opening.
Community Transit is building a four-story, five-level parking garage on the lower portion of the old park and ride site. The new transit center features "green" construction, including recycled building materials and solar panels. The garage will accommodate approximately 660 cars. The upper portion of the property, near the entrance, is being reconfigured and will have about 230 parking spaces. The new transit center will have a total capacity of about 890 parking spaces when complete. This is double the capacity of the old facility. In addition, the facility will have bike lockers and large shelters.
The concrete and structural steel work is complete. Stairs and the elevator tower are nearly finished, along with painting and rebuilding roadways. A new creek bed called “Mountain Creek,” a feature of the new facility, is being installed to display and accommodate a creek that has been flowing through a culvert on the property since the original park and ride was built. During the final three months of construction, contractors will also complete installation of lighting, security cameras, signs and solar panels.
Students from Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds-Woodway and Scriber Lake high schools created glass panels, which will be incorporated into the new structure by professional artist Gerry Newcomb.
No trees from the city's Veterans Memorial Park were removed for this project.
