City Council to Vote Tuesday on Parks Plan

City offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Recreation Pavilion will operate on normal hours.

The holiday moves the regular City Council meeting to Tuesday, Jan. 18. During a public hearing, the Council will review the Recreation, Parks and Open Space (RPOS) Plan. This long-range document presents a clear and concise vision for the city’s parks system. It looks at where we are now, what the anticipated Recreation, Parks and Open Space Plan draft coverneeds are, and how we can improve and upgrade existing facilities.

In addition to parks and open spaces, it covers trails, facilities, programs and services. This can be useful background for grant applications.

The proposed RPOS plan, which can be found online, is more than 100 pages long, plus appendices. A major piece of the conversation has been developing a master plan for Veterans Memorial Park, which will connect future light rail and the Civic Campus.

Public outreach for the RPOS process has included community surveys, stakeholder group discussions, an online open house, Recreation & Park Advisory Commission sessions, and Planning Commission and City Council meetings. There also were social media posts, news releases and other updates.
